RHS soccer program rallies the pink for two of their own
Tammy Haverkampf, mother to Izzy, who plays for the RHS girls' team, and Wyatt and Dillon on the boys' side, came up with the idea and the team enthusiastically took it from there. The idea was simple, have a collection of T-shirts and sweatshirts available for order that were made by Metro Screenprinting with $5 of the proceeds going to a cause to be selected. The deadline for ordering was Oct. 18, so that the shirts would be ready for the pink game.
"I came up with the idea. Every year we have the go pink stuff going on, and this year with my daughter being a senior, but they always get the pink shirts, but nothing else is done," Haverkampf said. "So I took it upon myself to organize the shirt sale and we raised $200."
Haverkampf said the team wanted to give the money to a local family that is going through a battle with cancer.
The family chosen as the recipient is one with long ties to the RHS soccer program, Joe and Nicole Dorion and their 2-year-old son Garrett. Joe graduated from RHS in 2006 and Nicole graduated in 2007.
"I had just got back from the Mayo Clinic, I was there for five weeks receiving radiation treatments," Nicole said. "We have a lot of expenses with gas and traveling, so having a little bit extra (money) around the holidays is just very, very helpful."
She noted that the fact that the donation came from the soccer program of their alma mater was particularly heartwarming.
The couple said when they were notified to come to the high school Monday evening for the presentation, it came out of the blue.
"It was an honor to be recognized," Nicole said. "Through this experience, we've really seen our community come together to support us."
As the local media was interviewing members of the team and the Dorions, Garrett was showing inherent soccer skills with an inflatable ball.
"Probably," Nicole said with a laugh, when asked if the boy will play soccer.
Haverkampf said another shirt sale to raise money for a local family is planned for this spring.
