Crescent Elementary School fifth graders recently celebrated the end of their first English Language (EL) module about human rights by hosting a special event.

Teachers and students extended an invitation to important people in their lives, grandparents and elderly loved ones, to join them for a special event inspired by "Esperanza Rising" a book the class read as part of the module, school officials explained in a press release.

According to Scholastic, "Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico, and that she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers."

In the book, Abuelita, Esperanza's grandmother, is an important member of their family.

To that end, students and staff wanted to celebrate the importance of grandparents and elderly members in their families, the release states.

The guests were treated to homemade flan and cinnamon tortilla chips that were prepared by Mr. and Mrs. Wiley. Students also recited monologues they prepared as part of their final assessment for the unit, and they were able to show off the yarn rag dolls that were made in class. In the story, Mama made a yarn doll for a child on a train. The dolls brought comfort to the small children throughout the book. Esperanza came to realize how the smallest of gifts can bring great joy to another person.

"The fifth grade teachers would like to thank the Crescent PAC for their donation of monies that were used to make the flan and tortilla chips," the release states.
