He will be missed by his mother, Dolores Voss (Eugene Voss), his sister Jen Voss (Steve Doll), his brother Richard Voss (Vickie Goehe), his nephew Eric Voss and his son Eugene Voss, his niece Greta Knowles (John Knowles) and their children Olivia, Xander and Eliza; his niece Heidi Voss; his special helper and cousin Nancy Roehr, and his special friend Linda Schmidt, as well as those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father Eugene H. Voss.
Fred was born in Milwaukee on April 25, 1952. His notable accomplishments in Milwaukee included his baptism and being a child TV star on a Milwaukee Public Television program. Unfortunately, the program only lasted for one episode.
He moved to Rhinelander in 1962 and resided at the family homestead on the Fox Ranch Road the rest of his life. He attended Crescent School and Rhinelander High School, graduating in 1970. He earned letters in football, wrestling and track.
He was one of the first students to attend Nicolet College, earning an associate's degree. He then attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he earned a bachelor's degree majoring in philosophy, a master's degree in the School of Engineering and a law degree from the School of Law.
He worked as an engineer at the Dana Corporation until the plant closed. He then came to Rhinelander where he practiced law until the time of his retirement. His practice was devoted mostly to low income people, concentrating on criminal law and bankruptcy law.
After his retirement he began a small business of making individualized T-shirts and YouTube videos, most of which were either comical or political, with his favorite being Ruby and Orchis playing dog and cat.
From time to time he would include his thoughts in the printed media through letters to the editor. A reading of his last letter to the River News in October of this year shows that even though his body was deteriorating rapidly his mind was still operating on all cylinders.
Fred's interests were varied. He was an avid cross country skier, with his favorite trail being from Fox Ranch Road to the Northwoods Golf Course. He was often accompanied by one of the dogs. He liked taking nature pictures with his video camera, with his favorite being the ice caves at Lake Superior. He was also a longtime softball player in the HCY church league, playing and managing for over 25 years. He also enjoyed berry picking and gardening, where he developed many new strains of potatoes.
He will be remembered most for his great sense of humor and being a friend to all, even through the last weeks of his life. It was his last wish that everyone would learn to get along peacefully.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kari Vadis officiating. Visitation will be at the fellowship hall at 10 a.m. and will feature a 38-minute DVD with Fred's observations on life in general. This will be followed by a brief service. Lunch will be served following the service. Instead of bringing flowers it would be preferred if a donation to the Oneida County Humane Society, the Rhinelander dog park, or any other charity, could be made in Fred's name.
