RHS volleyball team hands out awards
Five varsity players took home six different awards presented by the team.
Senior Cynthia Beavers, the team's lone all-Great Northern Conference selection, was voted the team's most valuable player. Beavers - who transferred from Three Lakes after last volleyball season - was unable to play in a number of matches at the start of the year, but she made an immediate impact once she got out on the court. Despite playing in only nine of the team's 12 conference matches, she led the Hodags with 62 kills in conference play and was second on the team in both digs (88) and service aces (10).
Beavers was unable to attend Sunday's banquet and coach Brianna Scheuermann kept her comments about the award brief.
"She definitely was getting balls up, blocks, attacks," the coach said.
Junior libero Hannah Worachek took home a pair of awards, both of which were voted on by her teammates. Worachek won the best defensive player award along with the hustle award. Worachek had a team-best 124 digs and also led the squad with 23 aces in conference play.
"She's definitely an all-around player but she was more valuable in back row getting balls up," Scheuermann said. "She was always active on the court. Halfway through the week she'd need new knee pads because she wore them out. Definitely one to get up every ball. She really did hustle a lot."
Freshman Ava Lamers, sophomore Ariel Pauer and senior Novalee Juel were the others to receive awards from the team.
Lamers received the coaches award, the only award not voted on my the team. Lamers was called up from the junior varsity squad about halfway through the season and finished with a team-best .217 attack percentage. She had 33 kills and only 10 errors in 106 total attempts.
Pauer won the best offensive player award. The 6-foot middle hitter was second on the team with 56 kills and led the team with 19 total blocks.
The final honor went to Juel, one of four seniors on the squad, who took home the most improved player award.
Rhinelander went 1-33 overall and 0-12 in the Great Northern Conference this season. It marked the second straight year that Rhinelander went winless in GNC play but, especially toward the end of the season, the Hodags did show improvement. Rhinelander won five sets in the GNC this season, up from only one set a year ago.
