John was born in Madison on Jan. 6, 1936, the son of Leo and Clara (Stoppleworth) Coyle. He was a 1953 graduate of Edgewood High School in Madison. John met his future wife while ice skating at Vilas Park in Madison when he was 13 years old. On May 12, 1956 at St. James Catholic Church in Madison, John was united in marriage to Dolores Wiese.
The couple lived in San Diego for two years. It was here they began their family, which grew to include six children. (John fondly referred to his family as the Coyle 8 ball.) John proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in San Diego during the Korean War. They moved to Madison for one year and then moved to Whitewater, where John earned his Bachelor of Education degree. He continued his education at the University of Northern Illinois at the School of Business Management where he earned a Master's of Science degree. The couple moved to Oshkosh in 1962 where John was employed by the Oshkosh Area Public Schools as administrative assistant. They moved to Stevens Point in 1974 where John served as Administrator of Business Affairs with Stevens Point Area Schools. The family moved to Rhinelander in 1978 where John served as Assistant Superintendent for Rhinelander Public Schools, retiring in August of 1993.
John was a member of Wisconsin Association of School Business Officials where he served as president in 1985. He was also a 3rd and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus where he was a past Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator.
He was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church. John and Dolores were involved for 25 years as a marriage preparation couple, and in 2012, they received the Spirit Award. John and Dolores were active with the Learning and Retirement program at Nicolet College and co-chaired the Social Committee for seven years.
John was a past member of the Nicolet Men's Chorus. He was a volunteer Eucharist Minister at St. Mary's Hospital and was a volunteer with ACES (Association of Churches for Emergency Support).
John was treasurer of the Rhinelander District Library Foundation and Past President of the Columbus Club. He was a past member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. John enjoyed staying active whether it was hunting, fishing, playing poker, reading, or learning new technology.
A recent highlight in his life was participating in the Honor Flight, which honors America's veterans for all of their sacrifices.
Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. John will be remembered forever for the impact he had in helping and serving others through his many acts of kindness.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 63 years, Dolores; six children, including: Sharon Kind, Wausau; Patrick (Mary) Coyle, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Joseph (Tina) Coyle, Phillips; Lou Anne (Tim) Sexton, Mendota Heights, Minn.; Michael (Michelle) Coyle, Superior; and Daniel (Terese Fuller) Coyle, Hazelhurst.
