Sun shines for first Hodag Farmers Market of the season
By Cassie Shefchik-
I snooped around all of the vendor stalls to check out what everyone had to offer. I managed to get in the way a little bit, as is very normal for me, but I was impressed by the great variety of items available.
There was rhubarb as there is at every first market. There were bedding plants too: heirloom tomatoes, peppers, snapdragons, herbs (lots of herbs), and perennials. Vendors were very willing to assist in care instructions for each kind of plant so shoppers could get great value.
There were bunches of onions, lettuce, radishes, mushrooms, and microgreens, to name a few of the fresh produce items.
The market also has a new vendor, PharmHer, who sold microgreens and will soon also have mushrooms.
PharmHer is from the Rhinelander area and is a very welcomed addition to the market. Remember, microgreens are great on salads, in smoothies and can be sauteed or boiled.
A couple of vendors brought pork to the market and they'll still have some in the weeks to come. There was also eggs, goat cheese, goat meat and some chicken at the Hodag Farmers' Market.
Maple syrup can also be purchased as well as home-canned pickles, relishes, jellies, jams, and many other home-canned goodies.
There's also fresh baked bread, cookies and muffins.
The Hodag Farmers' market prides itself on being, first and foremost, a farmers' market but we do allow some crafts: garden benches, birdhouses, stone art, woolies, potholders, dishcloths, bees wax infused cloths, microwave bags, recycled crayons, rugs, candles, and wreaths.
The Hodag Farmers' Market will be held at the lovely Pioneer Park every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This week all the vendors are hoping the wind doesn't pay us a visit yet again.
Several canopies had to be taken down early Saturday because the wind was so fierce it literally pulled stakes out of the ground causing some to take flight. One unfortunate vendor's canopy actually broke.
