FCPC breaks ground on historic community center in Crandon
"The Forest County Potawatomi is blessed with the opportunity to provide this new space for our people to celebrate their culture and strive towards a brighter future," FCPC Tribal Chairman Ned Daniels, Jr. said in a press release. "The new facility will serve as a gathering place for our community, offering athletic and educational programs for tribal members and employees of all ages."
The $60 million development will be the largest construction project in Forest County history and is expected to create approximately 150 construction jobs, the release notes.
The building's athletic facilities will have both an upper and lower level featuring a 20,000 square-foot wood court gymnasium, a 20,000 square-foot field house with synthetic turf, an 8,000 square-foot recreation and training pool, a 110-yard jogging track, a fitness center and weight room, a climbing wall and multiple studio rooms, the release states. The new gym will accommodate up to 1,500 spectators. The gymnasium and the field house will also serve as a competition space for sports and a performance venue for tribal pow-wows.
In addition to its athletic facilities, the Community Center will provide educational and vocational support spaces including a fab lab, wood shop, teaching kitchen and pediatric therapy suite. A child care suite will be on-site as well, which will offer parents a place they can bring their children while they take advantage of the various programs and activities the community center will offer. The building will also feature a two-story commons in its center that will connect all the various spaces and serve as a potential site for community gatherings.
"The community center will be located at the intersection of Mish Ko Swen Drive and Fire Keeper's Lane near Highway 8 in Crandon. The FCPC has designed the structure to fit the land rather than attempting to mold the land to fit the structure, which means that disturbance of the original site will be minimized," the release states. "The facility will also be constructed in such a way that reduces its energy needs, featuring a roof design that will support the installation of solar panels. In addition, the community center will use energy-efficient LEDs, highly efficient condensing boilers for heating and a water- conserving regenerative filter system for the pool."
Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2021.
