Two young writers have advanced to the national level in a recent General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) writing contest.

Abigail Bixby and Eva Hetland received first place awards at the recent GFWC state convention in Pleasant Prairie, according to a School District of Rhinelander press release.

"The pieces were entered following a local competition in February for grades 6-8 sponsored by GFWC Rhinelander Woman's Club," the release states. "A poem called 'Close Shaves in an Unfair World' by Abigail Bixby from James Williams Middle School and a short story entitled 'Car Crash' by Eva Hetland from Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School, were both deserving of blue ribbon recognition which allows these creative writings to go on to the national level within the General Federation of Women's Clubs in July. There are 50 clubs affiliated with GFWC-WI."
