Ken was born on Nov. 5, 1937 to Roy and Francis Mikkelson in Monico.
The family later moved to Rhinelander where he met Bonnie Nelson and they were married on Sept. 6, 1958. They moved to the Minocqua-Woodruff area the following year where they started and raised their family.
They remained in the area until Bonnie passed away in June of 2018.
Ken had many hobbies. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting for deer and partridge.
He also was involved in a variety of sports including softball, racquetball, and hockey which he played into his early 20s and then refereed. His real passion was restoring antique vehicles and gas pumps. He was also a skilled handyman and there wasn't anything around the house he couldn't fix. He also enjoyed woodworking and would make furniture, picture frames and gun stocks, which are now treasured possessions to his kids.
While Ken was a man of few words, there was never any question as to his views on a subject.
He was always short and to the point, often using a colorful or catchy phrase to make that point.
He is survived by his five children: Casey (Andrea) Mikkelson of Edgerton; Kelly (Marilyn) Mikkelson of Downey, Ind.; Kenny (Renee) Mikkelson of West Chester, Ohio; Andy Mikkelson of Milwaukee; and Amy Haleen of Sister Bay; along with his grandchildren Gage, Ben, Carley, Riley, Raina, Haven, Max, Isabelle and Logan.
He is also survived by his sister Faythe (James) Stefonik of Rhinelander and brother David Mikkelson of Cape Coral, Fla. plus many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Nimsgern Funeral Home in Woodruff from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and will conclude with a short prayer and reception.
