As part of their community project, members of a group within the 2018-19 Leadership Oneida County class are partnering with Headwaters, Inc. in an effort to promote literacy, health, and wellness throughout Oneida County.

The Hodag Hutch project will increase opportunities for reading engagement and access to personal care items throughout Oneida County with a recognizable network located within or near local organizations and businesses, Leadership Oneida County officials announced in a press release. Hutches for literacy will be various sized baskets, while hutches for personal essentials will be mailbox shaped containers; all identifiable with the Hodag Hutch logo, the release states.

"Leadership Oneida County creates an awareness of services and organizations within the county, and reinforces the call to civic responsibility and citizen involvement," the release states. "A tour of Headwaters, Inc. was part of Community Service Day. While there, the class heard about the increased interest in volunteerism from people receiving supports and their goal to become more involved in the community. Our group quickly realized that they were the natural partner we needed to execute our project with the intention of sustainability. We want Hodag Hutches to be around for a long time and in order to do that, we needed to connect with a group interested in continuing to manage the program. Headwaters Inc. is very excited to be a part of this great project and is confident that the local community will see its importance as well. They would like to invite anyone interested in helping with this project to consider donating items to fill these containers."

Donations needed are: books, magazines, and other reading martials; as well as, unused toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, deodorant, shampoo, soaps, and body wash.

Also needed are wicker baskets in various sizes.

All donations can be dropped off at Headwaters, Inc. at: 1441 E Timber Lane, Rhinelander. Business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 to 3:30 p.m. A 24-hour dropbox is located by their main entrance.

Leadership Oneida County is a nine-month program that cultivates and prepares emerging leaders in Oneida County. For more information about Leadership Oneida County, contact the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce.
