Local woman wins Youmans Citizenship Award
Oestreicher received the award at the 122nd GFWC-Wisconsin Annual State Convention held in Pleasant Prairie Friday, May 3, the GFWC Rhinelander Woman's Club announced in a press release.
"The Theodora Youmans Citizenship Award is one of the most treasured awards given by GFWC-Wisconsin since 1937," the release states. "At its onset, Mrs. Youmans provided in her will that the award should be made for the most honorable contribution to citizenship. There is only one winner each year, and it is an honor to be nominated."
Youmans was born Theodora Winton in Ashippun in Dodge County in 1863. She was raised in New Berlin where her father was a merchant. In 1889, she married Henry Youmans, editor of the Waukesha Freeman. In 1898 she was elected President of the Wisconsin Federation of Women's Clubs.
"Her influence had a marked bearing on Federation policies and growth for many years," the release states. "She was a woman who worked tirelessly for women and the suffragist movement."
"The interesting thing is that now 10 folks are doing the leadership job that Barb Oestreicher did for 10 years! That tells you how much effort it takes to run PEP. And Barb did it with such a joyful heart" said friend and sister clubwoman Connie Griesbach. PEP has served hundreds of families in Rhinelander since its inception; Oestreicher recorded numerous hours fundraising, ordering and picking up products, stocking shelves and screening applicants. She has just stepped down from leadership within the last few months yet still volunteers despite her decreased mobility. Also at convention the GFWC Rhinelander Woman's Club was the recipient of 10 state awards at for its work in the community in the areas of arts, education, conservation, leadership, membership, public issues, international outreach and its 120th club anniversary projects. Individual members and local students were also recognized for their art and writing projects. Artwork by three Rhinelander students was on display and in competition for the Helen Farnsworth Mears Art Contest as well.
