The Rhinelander High School softball team could not keep up with Antigo Friday. The Robins collected 14 hits and broke the game open with an eight-run fifth to defeat the Hodags 16-0 at Pioneer Park.

Antigo scored in every inning except the third and got a four-hit shutout from pitcher Emily Brettingen.

"Antigo, the pitcher did a good job," coach D.J. DeMeyer said. "I think Antigo had 14 hits. They're a top echelon team in the (conference). They hit the ball."

Erika Heirzen was 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs for Antigo, including a two-run double that was the key shot in a five-run first for Antigo. Alicia Turunen, the starting goalie for the Rhinelander/Antigo girls' hockey co-op, hit a two-run double for the Robins in the fifth, which was followed by a two-run triple by Lizzy Burkhardt.

The Hodags were officially credited with only one error, though DeMeyer said the team could have made better decisions at times when the ball was put in play.

"Our effort was a little better today, but we had too many mental errors," he said. "We've got to get the girls knowing what they're doing when a pitch is thrown. We don't always have that. We talked about it before the game, but it's something that really needs to be worked on in practice and unfortunately we don't have a lot of practice time this year."

Senior Mikayla Evenstad had two of Rhinelander's four hits in the contest. Brylee Ridderbusch and Haylie Stefonek had the others. Rhinelander had a base runner in every inning and stranded runners in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings.

Ridderbusch pitched all five innings for the Hodags, allowing 15 earned runs on 14 hits with eight walks and two strikeouts.

"I asked her a couple of times if she wanted to come out and she shook her head right at the mound (and said) no," DeMeyer said. "She's starting to get that bulldog mentality and I like that in her."

Sophia McGinnis made her first start of the season at catcher Friday, after playing pitcher and second base so far this season.

"Sophie caught for us today and she did a valiant job back there," DeMeyer noted.

The Hodags are in the midst of a home-and-home series against Medford. Rhinelander traveled to take on the Raiders last night in a game that concluded after deadline and will return home to face Medford this afternoon.
