Gwyneth Lowry recorded her first varsity hat trick and the Hodags rolled to a 9-0 victory over Mosinee Thursday night at Mike Webster Stadium.
The Hodags have now won five straight, all in the GNC, outscoring their opponents 29-0 in the process.
It was parents' night for the Hodags Thursday night and coach Richard Kotula said those in attendance were treated to a clinical performance by his side.
"The girls made them proud. They did a nice job of playing as a team," he said.
Rhinelander wasted no time taking command of the match, scoring four goals in the first 19 minutes. Kenedy Van Zile got the party started in the opening minute off an assist from Jaden Olski and Lowry scored in the 14th minute to make it 2-0. Lowry and Izzy Haverkampf both scored in the 19th minute as the Hodags pushed the lead to 4-0 and Ella Schiek tacked on a goal before halftime to put the Rhinelander ahead 5-0.
Lowry scored her third goal in the 55th minute to give Rhinelander a 6-0 lead. Kotula said a change in position led to the scoring outburst from the Hodag sophomore.
"Outside wing is where she played more of the game today and she really did a nice job distributing the ball in the air from crosses and, of course, finishing, which was nice to see from Gwyn," he said.
With the game well in hand, the Hodags switched goalkeepers, putting Lisa White in net and letting starter Kahlie Arneson get out and play the field. Arneson proved she can do more than just stop goals as she scored off a Brooke Mork assist in the 72nd minute and then assisted on a Rachel Steffen goal in the 77th.
"She has a lot of heart and when she's in the game as a player, that brings a lot of excitement from all the players and the parents," Kotula said. "She created some great opportunities for herself and her teammates."
Jaden Olski rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 87th minute.
In total, Rhinelander put roughly 72 percent of its shots on goal in the match, and scored on more than a quarter of their shots.
"I was very pleased with the amount of shots we placed on goal," Kotula said. "Thirty-five shots total and 25 on goal, which is a great percentage. That speaks well of some of the accuracy that we've been working on and continue to work on for scoring opportunities."
Neither Arneson nor White were tested when they were in goal. Rhinelander's defense held its opponent without a single shot for the second consecutive match.
"Emma Hjelle and Brooke Mork, our center backs, did a nice job shutting down the Mosinee team," Kotula said. "They didn't allow any scoring opportunities at all. It was a huge success for them."
The Hodags return to action this afternoon against Marshfield in a 5 p.m. kickoff at Mike Webster Stadium. It will be Rhinelander's first non-conference game since opening weekend, and a critical test when it comes to WIAA tournament seeding.
"We need to step up and play a different game against Marshfield," Kotula said. "We need to play our game with a lot of pressure. Defending is going to be much different and attacking is going to be different, too. We'll need to adjust to play a game against Marshfield. They're a good team and it's a postseason opponent. We need to think about seeding during that game and the girls know it."
