Violet Eileen Miazga
Violet was born on Saint Nicholas Day, Dec. 6, 1924, to Andrew and Mary Baker in Sugar Camp. The fourth of four daughters, she enjoyed her childhood days on a beautiful farm in Northern Wisconsin with horses, chickens, cows, a big collie dog, and beautiful, plentiful gardens. She was instilled with good solid values, a strong work ethic, and an enduring faith.
Having attended a one-room schoolhouse, she maintained, "You could learn a lot, if you paid attention." And she did, as she graduated second in her class at Rhinelander High School. She went on to Chicago where she was employed by The Grolier Society, Book of Knowledge, as secretary to the company's president. She also attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
While home on a visit, she met the love of her life, Stan Miazga. He was in his Air Force uniform, having returned from flying 50 missions in Europe. He would say, "She made me smile." They married on Oct. 22, 1949, built a beautiful home and life together, with three children to follow. Their home was famous for its hospitality.
Everyone was welcome. In a flash, Vi would put together a meal. Her hands could do a thousand things.
A committed civic advocate, she volunteered for multiple organizations and charities. She and Stan often helped someone "down on their luck," giving them a "leg-up." They typically did so anonymously. They were quiet, humble givers, leading by example. She was also an active, involved member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Vi had an abundance of creativity and interests. She was a talented watercolor artist, enjoyed creating and painting ceramic pieces, and was endowed with a gifted green thumb. Her flower gardens were an admired display of vibrant color each summer. Her vegetable gardens were bursting with peas, beans, raspberries in July, varieties of tomatoes, and every good thing. She savored the abundance of her fresh harvest, often sharing the fruits of those gardens.
Most of all, Vi was a charming, entertaining, delightful person to be around. She had an infectious smile, a sweet dimple in her cheek, and a sparkle of fun in her eyes. Vi was energetic, forward-moving, and continuously grateful for what she had. Her spirit of positivity was natural, unwavering, and inspirational. You could learn a lot from her.
Violet was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Stan, and her son-in-law, William. She is survived by her children, James, Mary, Joan; daughter-in-law Jean, son-in-law William; grandchildren Kathryn, Andrea, David, Emily, Sarah; their spouses Joseph, Blaine, Laura, Christopher; great-grandchildren Evelyn, Charles William, Violet, Mary Rose, Ivy and Olivia. Her legacy and spirit will continue on in them.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., all at the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church.
Officiating will be Father Michael Tupa and Vi's nephew Father Peter Guthneck. Interment will follow in the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Stanley and Violet Miazga Scholarship Fund to support tuition assistance at Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School, Rhinelander.
