Women's club invites public to view student art projects
In addition, the GFWC Rhinelander Woman's Club will host a special reception for the artists from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 9 at ArtStart.
"We invite the public to the reception at ArtStart where the artwork of the students will be celebrated," Barb Oestreicher, co-chairwoman of the art contest, announced in a press release.
Student art will be judged and announced at the reception. The club offers monetary awards for first, second, and third place winners. Rhinelander schools and art teachers have been working with their students throughout the school year; students submit one entry in each of two categories: 2-D (painting and drawing) and 3-D (sculpture) in two classes: Class A for students who attend a school with a certified art instructor and Class B for students who attend a school without a certified art instructor i.e. classroom teacher who teaches art or home-schooled students.
The purpose of this contest is to encourage student artists and promote art within our local community, the release states.
The contest was created in 1927 to honor renowned Oshkosh sculptor Helen Farnsworth Mears.
Winners of the local contest will compete at the second judging level at the district meeting in Antigo April 13 and then proceed to the third judging level at the GFWC-WI State Convention in May in Pleasant Prairie.
State level winners will have their work displayed at the Oshkosh Public Museum, home of Helen Farnsworth Mears, during the Museum's summer art exhibit.
