Rhinelander Swim club competes at Midwest Regionals
RSC had 23 swimmers qualify to swim in the meet, but with the timing of the meet coinciding with spring break, only eight athletes were able to participate.
RSC head coach Megan Cihla was on deck for the meet
"This weekend brought mixed emotions, it was a very bittersweet meet for me," she said. "I had swimmers who are just starting on their journey and then I had two swimmers who were ending their swim club journey."
Jack Antonuk, Paul Denis, Shawn Denis, Daniel Gillingham, Dean Gillingham, Karly Gillingham, Emma Houg and Noelle St. Pierre took part in the meet.
"This level of meet was a new experience for Dean Gillingham, Karly Gillingham and Paul Denis," Cihla said. "This meet is host to over 1,000 swimmers with clubs from nine states in the Midwest competing. There are two pools being swam in at the same time, it can be overwhelming for new swimmers. They were excited and nervous at the same time, but swam their hearts out and really focused on the small technical things we worked on during practice the week before.
"For his first big meet, Dean took eighth place overall in high points for his age group. Shawn Denis, Emma Houg, Noelle St. Pierre and Jack Antonuk were Midwest Regional veterans. They came in strong and were fierce competitors.
"Daniel Gillingham was also new to this meet, but after swimming at state, he looked like a veteran. He dropped time in most of his events and is really finding out what he is capable of doing."
St. Pierre broke the RSC record in the 200-yard breaststroke in the 13-14 age group with a time of 2 minutes, 40.74 seconds.
"That was a great race to end her season," Cihla said.
Jack Antonuk took first in his 200-yard butterfly race, was second in the 400 individual medley, fourth in the 100 butterfly and finished sixth place overall in high points in his age group.
"It's always so much fun watching him race," Cihla said. "He is a distance swimmer for the most part and he really turns on the heat his last 25 yards making for some exciting finishes.
"I want to wish Jack, Daniel and the other eighth-grade boys luck as they transition to the RHS boys' swim team next fall. You will be greatly missed but I am excited to see what the next four years hold for you all. You will go far."
