Sugar Camp native Josephine Cameron will release her debut novel, "Maybe a Mermaid," this week. The book, which has been described as an "ode to growing up in Northern Wisconsin," will be available starting Tuesday, March 26.

According to a press release announcing the book, "Maybe a Mermaid," is the story of 11-year-old Anthoni who has always wanted a True Blue Friend. "This summer at The Showboat Resort, she has a foolproof checklist for finding one. But as she grows entangled in rumors about the local Boulay Mermaid, Anthoni must decide if she'll 'stick to the plan,' like always, or dive into a summer full of extraordinary possibilities."

The location of "Maybe a Mermaid" is loosely based on Marty's Showboat, a boat-shaped lounge that used to exist at the Northernaire Resort in Three Lakes. "Ex-vaudeville stars performed there - even Bob Hope!" Cameron said in the release. "By the time I was a kid, it was run down, but that place always got my imagination going."

According to the Three Lakes Historical Society website, the Northernaire Resort was designed by the baseball player Cy Williams and constructed by Carl Marty and his brother in 1947.

"It opened in 1948 to much excitement," according to the Historical Society website. "The Northernaire, or the 'Waldorf of the Wilderness' as it was fondly called, was a luxury resort located on both Deer and Big Stone Lakes just miles from the town of Three Lakes. Open year round, the resort boasted only 60 exquisitely appointed rooms and suites. The resort had a swimming pool, boats, facilities for horseback riding and summer/winter sports equipment, just to name a few. Adjacent to the resort was a golf course and supper club, the Showboat, both of which were built and opened by Carl Marty in 1940."

"The Northernaire entertained wealthy individuals from all over the United States until 1979, when Carl Marty passed away," according to the website. "For years the resort was constantly changing hands and owners were forced to claim bankruptcy. However, in 2007 the resort was re-opened once again, but as a complex of condos and suites with a spa attached."

In the release, Cameron notes she remembers how tough elementary school friendships can be and those memories informed her writing.

"Anthoni has to define for herself what a True Blue Friend really is," Cameron said. "More importantly, she has to learn how to be one. When I was a kid, those were tough lessons. I remember vividly every time I failed. But my true friends were always the ones who helped me become a better person."

Cameron earned her undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College, and her MFA in creative writing from the University of Notre Dame. She resides in Maine, where she writes, sings, and teaches music to kids. For more information about the book, which is geared toward children in grades 3-6, visit www.josephine
