Genius 3D mammography now available at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital
Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, Genius exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers and decreasing the number of women asked to return for additional testing, the release states.
"We believe breast tomosynthesis will benefit all screening and diagnostic mammography patients and is especially valuable for women receiving a baseline screening, those who have dense breast tissue and women with a personal history of breast cancer," said Steven Brown, M.D., an Ascension Medical Group Radiologist on staff at Ascension St. Mary's.
Ascension St. Mary's breast tomosynthesis system is made by Hologic, a world leader in digital mammography. The Selenia Dimensions system offers exceptionally sharp breast images, an advanced ergonomic design providing more patient comfort, and the ground-breaking tomosynthesis platform designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance for all breast types.
Clinical studies in the United States and Europe have demonstrated the positive benefits of a Genius 3D exam.
One large study on breast cancer screening using the Genius exam was published in the June 25, 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Its findings concluded that when using the Genius 3D Mammography exam compared to 2D alone, 20-65 percent of more invasive breast cancers were found with an average increase of 41 percent. The study also found a 40 percent reduction of exam callbacks for women for additional testing after a Genius 3D Mammography exam compared to 2D.
"The tomosynthesis screening experience is similar to a traditional mammogram," said Dan Tesch, regional manager of imaging services for Ascension. "During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast."
"By offering women the latest and most advanced technology in mammography, we hope to detect breast cancer as early as possible on annual screening mammograms," Brown said. "Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer and statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman's chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is more than 98 percent."
Ascension St. Mary's committed to the fight against breast cancer by offering 3-D screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, ultrasound guided breast biopsies and breast magnetic resonance imaging. In offering 3-D breast tomosynthesis digital mammography, Ascension St. Mary's provides the latest in imaging technology.
Access to this level of technology in the Northwood's was made possible through the additional support of the Foundation of Ascension St. Mary's Hospital and Tomahawk Ties that Bind Us.
"We are grateful for the support of the Ascension St. Mary's Foundation and Tomahawk Ties that Bind Us which led to the addition of this technology which provides another sense of confidence for our patients and family members who depend on the services we provide," Ascension St. Mary's Hospital president Sandy Anderson said.
