With Muir's own writings providing the unifying thread and the ensemble's accompanying score of nature-forged new music, "University of the Wilderness" celebrates Muir's life and legacy as one of the world's great naturalists, the college announced in a press release.
The score is the creation of Cheryl Leah and Ed Willett and is deftly performed by the Chance Ensemble of voice, cello, and violin, the release states. Narrated by Norman Gilliland of Wisconsin Public Radio, the show's musical landscape is a place where contemporary, classical, and Celtic music beautifully collide to deliver a deep appreciation for Muir.
With Gilliland giving voice to Muir's writing, the ensemble takes the audience on a journey from Muir's childhood in Scotland to his young life in Wisconsin and finally to his profound and influential experiences in the great Sierra Nevada Mountains. What is revealed are the undercurrents and influences that shaped him, forging his Sierra Club legacy and his role in history as the father of our national park system.
"John Muir - University of the Wilderness" debuted in 2014 and was followed by a 10-performance run in the Midwest. The troupe toured Scotland the following year. In 2016, 32 performances across 12 states covered 26,000 miles celebrating the centennial of the National Park Service.
"In creating the program we kept as our guide the goal of reflecting the multi-dimensional nature of Muir, his indomitable spirit, his daring and adventurous nature, the beauty and the humor of the man," according to Leah and Willett. "This show leaves the audience with a desire to rekindle their relationship with his words and to follow in his footsteps."
"This production pairs perfectly with our Northwoods audience and setting," noted Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall. "Muir had the same deep appreciation for the natural environment that we do."
