From March 3-6, 17 Rhinelander High School students competed at the Wisconsin DECA State Career Development Conference in Lake Geneva.

DECA is an organization that helps prepares students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. DECA has events from Finance and Banking Systems to Sports and Entertainment Marketing and includes both team and individual competitions. At State, students had to take a 100-question test concerning the field their event is in, as well as an economics test. They also performed two role plays in which the student is given a business situation and must act it out to resolve the issue with a judge. Medals are awarded to students for earning high scores in their tests, on either of their role plays, and for placing in the top 10 of their event.

Ten Rhinelander students qualified to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC), which will be held in Orlando, Fla. in late April. All 50 states and several countries including Canada, Mexico, Germany, China, and Spain are represented. Abby Krueger, Kaylee Brown and Emma Wendt earned fifth place in the Community Service Project event and will continue on to ICDC. In addition, Valerie Dalka and Carmen Ibarra took first in Hospitality Team Decision Making and will also be competing at ICDC. Zoe Lewallen will also be continuing on to ICDC for the Aspiring Leaders Conference. Alexis Denny, Sabrina Fus, Lily Eternicka, and Ashleigh Hull are eligible to go to ICDC for THRIVE Academy.

Several other students were recognized on stage for their performances in tests and role plays. Krueger, who competed in Hotel and Lodging Management received a medal for both of her role plays. Abbey Henrichs and Gwyn Lowry received a medal for their cluster test. In addition to our competitors, Lewallen was recognized for doing Gold Chapter, which required her to make a scrap book detailing all of the activities Rhinelander DECA has participated in this year. Through this project, she was recognized on stage and received a non-competitive spot to ICDC.

Rhinelander DECA was also recognized for our accomplishments as a whole this year. First, the group received recognition for our Community Service Campaign which included Acts of Kindness, General Contributions to Charity, 100 Hours, MDA, and Trick or Can. Secondly, we were recognized for our Membership Campaign, Chapter Campaign, National Diamond Chapter, and Wisconsin Gold Chapter.

"Overall Rhinelander DECA hopes to continue our involvement in the community for years to come," the district sated in a press release. "Chapter advisor Mischell Fryar was very impressed by the hard work of all of the competitors. The 10 students going to Orlando in April have lots to prepare for and Fryar is excited to see what is to come at Internationals."

Those who would like to make a donation to assist the students attending ICDC or have any questions, may contact Fryar at 715-365-9500 or fryar [email protected].
