According to Pierce, the NWLT Board of Directors already has a search committee in place and the position announcement has gone out to other land trusts across the country. "I plan to work through our annual meeting the last of June, but then be gone most of the summer except for a property dedication the first week in August," said Pierce. "We are hoping to have some overlap time in mid-June with the new director."
"As a founder and the first Executive Director of the Northwoods Land Trust, this has been the best possible career choice I could have hoped for," Pierce reflected. "With over 13,000 acres and 70 miles of lake and river shorelines protected, over 100 conservation projects completed, an outstanding board of directors to work with, extraordinary committed landowners, and an organization that has grown from an all-volunteer group working on our first two conservation easement projects, to having a permanent office and visitor center with an exceptional staff of five dedicated and talented individuals, we have come a long way. We have come so far, in fact, that I am absolutely certain the Northwoods Land Trust is well positioned as a sustainable conservation organization long into the future. That makes me very comfortable making the decision that is it time for me to ride off into the sunset (literally) and let someone else take over the reins of this outstanding organization."
"While I am still healthy enough to do it, my goal is to do horse packing and flyfishing trips on some long distance trails including the Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. That means being gone long enough that I don't want to affect the land trust's operations, so the time is right," Pierce said.
The Northwoods Land Trust was organized in 2001 as a member and volunteer supported nonprofit conservation organization. Its office is based in downtown Eagle River. "We are planning on holding our Annual Meeting here in Eagle River on Friday afternoon, June 21. I hope to be able to see many of our conservation land and easement donors and our 40 active volunteers there to thank them for all of their support and introduce them to the next executive director," said Pierce.
