Pictured is Mary Perlberg from the Rhinelander Seventh Day Adventist is seen here presenting Jane Motowski with a check for $1,000 for the Weekend Food for Kids program. The Weekend Food for Kids program is an awesome program in itself but after presenting the check we were given a tour of the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry.

What an amazing process. It goes full circle! I have always thought the food pantry has always done a wonderful job with takin gin and distributing food but I had no idea just what all goes on there.

The food comes in from donations from so many different places in Rhinelander. Friendship House restaurant donates soups that are packaged up and frozen for people to take. Trig's, Kwik Trip, Aldi, Golden Harvest and Walmart donate day old breads and bakery items to give away. They also donate fruits and vegetables and canned food through the Feeding America Program, people donate food and money and I just found out that money is way better as they can buy four cans to our one with the Feeding America Program. The community garden produce goes to the food pantry and the grapes they grow are lovingly made into fresh jelly and jams.

What a labor of love! I had no idea so many people were involved, bagging the soup, sorting and stacking the food items, making jelly, helping people get what they need, packing the backpacks for children to take home over the weekend so there are healthy snacks for them.

The produce that is not good for people is not just wasted by being thrown out but put into bags and given to a pig farmer who in turn donates a pig to the food pantry.

They do gifts for families at Christmas and take new toys and such any time of year to be given out. Dolls with beautiful handmade outfits, another huge gift of love. Never before had I thought of the Food Pantry as anything other than a place for people in need to get food. Now I look at it as a building full of loving and kind people doing what Jesus would have them do.

If you have never been to the Rhinelander Food Pantry and you donate to it, I suggest you go and see where your money is going and how efficiently it is being used. I know from my tour we will at least double my donations from what we were giving. Thank you Rhinelander Area Food Pantry for your love, and hard work in all you do.

To reach the food pantry call 715-369-7237. For food emergency call 715-628-0664. Hours for the Food Pantry in Rhinelander are Mondays 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
