Restore the Door: Masonic Lodge fundraising drive for district library
"Late January saw the replacement of the former Carnegie doors with a single door and sidelights, as well as a new transom," the library stated in a press release. "The Masons approached the RDL Board of Trustees with the plan to place 'RESTORE THE DOOR' collection cans out-similar to the 'Pete the Penny' campaign the original Friends of the Library (now Rhinelander District Library Foundation) used to raise money for the addition. Funds raised will assist in completing a vestibule for Carnegie entry, and other necessary renovations associated with this change - and ongoing changes, at RDL."
The Rhinelander Masonic Lodge laid the original cornerstone in September 1903 for the Rhinelander District Library containing a time capsule. Like the Rhinelander Woman's Club, they are founders and historic, regular supporters of the public library here in Rhinelander.
When the plan was made public to open the original Carnegie entrance, Tony Jones, Master of Rhinelander Masonic Lodge No. 242, approached the RDL Board with plans to help. The Board responded enthusiastically, and appreciated the nod to the original late 1970s and early 1980s fundraising campaign.
"The Carnegie doors were closed in 1984, when the modern addition was opened," the library stated. "Over the years, the entry has deteriorated. The doors and transom were not insulated causing snow to blow in between them along with ice build-up along the window, transom and entranceway. In the past, the doors were sealed with electrical tape and draft guards. To compound matters, the doors on the 1984 addition are now affected by the weather causing that entry to not open or close properly. The Board agreed the addition's doors should be closed permanently and the original entrance should open. To accommodate this change, a vestibule will be constructed. The front desk on the main level needs to turn 90 degrees and some printers and collections will be relocated. There have been several gifts to RDL and the Masonic Lodge is raising funds to pay for this and other potential building efforts."
