School Board president: Jacobi 'made quite the impact on district'
"We're going to be sorry to see her go," Counter said. "She has made quite the impact on our district, she has really moved the district forward, so she is going to be a hard person to replace."
Jacobi, who replaced Roger Erdahl as SDR superintendent in 2013, was a teacher in the district prior to that. When she retires next June, it will be after 29 years in the district and 40 overall in education. She informed the board of her decision following the Feb. 18 board meeting.
On Friday, Jacobi said it was important that the board know of her plans as far in advance as possible, especially since the district is already looking for a director of instruction to replace Teri Maney, who will become the administrator of Three Lakes Schools next year.
"That's why we had the conversation so early," Jacobi said. "I hadn't been worried about how they would take it, or I would have waited to inform them. But I wanted to keep everything calm, they got lots of notice, I didn't want them to panic."
Counter said he is glad that Jacobi gave the board over a year's notice.
"We'll do the director of instruction, hopefully pretty soon," Counter said. "As soon as we finish that up, we'll start the process for the superintendent."
Counter has been through the process of changing superintendents a couple of times, and said the board usually doesn't get this much advanced notice.
"It's really a positive thing for the district because it allows us to post the position early and that way we got the ability to maybe find someone high quality," Counter said.
Jacobi said, before she retires, she wants to make sure that the elementary grade reconfiguration is completed.
"My goal is to get all of the elementary school buildings all solid, work out any issues that need to be resolved," Jacobi said. "Because it will be a big change for the district, so I want to make sure everything is solid and there is a nice, strong team of administrative team is in place. I'm not sure what the board will want to do about strategic planning, but whatever they do decide to do, we'll be working on that."
