Metz requests bond modification for inpatient treatment in vehicular homicide case

Tyler J.L. Metz, 19, is charged with homicide by vehicle with the use of a controlled substance, possession of narcotics, possession of methamphetamine and causing injury while under the influence, a misdemeanor, in addition to first offense driving while intoxicated. He has entered not guilty pleas to all counts.
According to the complaint, Metz is accused of being high on drugs, leading to a two-car crash near Boulder Junction in January that killed Timothy Boss, 59, Manitowish Waters.
Criminal defense lawyer Brian Kinstler last week requested a temporary bond modification that would permit his client to attend a 30-day inpatient treatment program at Koinonia Residential Treatment Center in Rhinelander starting June 25.
Metz was released from custody on a $5,000 cash bond under orders to live with and always be in the company of his grandparents who reside in Rhinelander, not possess or consume intoxicants, receive alcohol and drug treatment, not have contact with the victim's family, follow a curfew and not drive.
"The proposed modification is, by all means, somewhat more restrictive than the conditions currently in effect," noted Kinstler in his petition.
District attorney Martha Milanowski did not object to the inpatient treatment and signed off on the request.
The petition order was electronically signed last week by Judge Neal A. Nielsen.
Post-release, all bond conditions are expected to go back into effect, with continued employment as well as permission to attend medical appointments for care related to injuries Metz sustained in the crash, court reports note.
Metz is due back in court July 30.
The Boss family has also filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit in Vilas County, with action next set for early July.
