The rematch was an entitely different story.
Laser Pros International jumped on Rhinelander Green for four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, knocking off their intra-city rivals 12-1 in five innings Tuesday night at Stafford Field.
The win moved Laser Pros to 11-0 on the season and locked in the matchup for the Senior League regular season championship game. Laser Pros will face Eagle River Red Monday, July 8 at Stafford Field.
Rhinelander Green entered the game needing to run the table and get some help to have a chance to finish tied for second in the standings.
Laser Pros cashed in on opportunities from the word go. Tim Fox led off by reaching on an error, which loomed large in the inning as Laser Pros scored all four of its runs with two outs. Ian Miller hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Fox, Jesse Mahner followed with an RBI-single and Ben Sinclair hit a two-run double to stake Laser Pros to a quick 4-0 lead.
Kaden Chillemi walked and scored on a botched pickoff play in the second and Laser Pros put the game out of reach with a seven-run third. Jordan Kuczmarski walked and scored when an attempt to throw out Logan Schmoeger stealing second sailed into the outfield. Logan Cook followed with an RBI double to plate Schmoeger. After Chillemi reached on a dropped third strike, Isaac Bixby hit a two-run single to make it 9-0 and chase Rhinelander Green starter Quinn Lamers from the hill.
Devyn Orth greeted reliever Ryan Jamison with an RBI single and Jesse Mahner hit a two-run double to give Laser Pros a 12-0 lead.
Rhinelander Green got a run back in the fourth as Lamers walked, stole second and third and came around on a Kolby Ridderbusch single. Ridderbusch collected two of the three hits on the night for Rhinelander Green. Joe Schneider was also credited with a single in the first when he hit a fly ball to left that popped in and out of Sinclair's glove on a diving attempt.
Bixby started and pitched three scoreless innings for Laser Pros, allowing two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Orth was credited with the win in relief, allowing a run on a hit with a walk and a strikeout in the fourth. Schmoeger pitched a scoreless fifth to close out the game for Laser Pros.
Lamers was tagged for 10 runs in 2 2/3 innings for Rhinelander Green, but only one of those runs was earned. He allowed five hits, walked five and struck out four. Jamison allowed two runs on two hits in two innings of relief. Schneider faced only one batter, striking out Orth to end the Laser Pros fifth.
Laser Pros had seven hits in the contest - including two each from Bixby and Mahner.
Rhinelander Green dropped to 6-5 with the loss and is even in the loss column with Three Lakes, Tomahawk and Eagle River Red (4-5), who all sit a game back in a three-way tie for fourth.
Lakeland Gray stuns Rhinelander Green
In the Prep League Wednesday Rhinelander Green struggled from the outset and fell to Lakeland Gray 11-0 at the 70 West Complex in Minocqua. Prior to Wednesday night's game Lakeland Gray's only wins in the Prep League had come against last-place Lakeland Black.
Rhinelander allowed two runs in the first, one in the second and eight in the third. Rhinelander had base runners, collecting six hits and drawing three walks, but never could get a run across. Owen Kurtz was 2-for-2 with a double in the contest. Jackson Freese, Adrian Patrone, Connor Augustine and Ben Lyon also recorded hits.
Max Ratty, Augustine and Kurtz pitched in the contest for Rhinelander Green. Their pitching lines were not reported.
Rhinelander Green was supposed to play Lakeland Black Thursday at Stafford Field but, for the second time in five days, Lakeland Black was a no-show and Rhinelander Green was credited with a forfeit win, which brought its record back to 6-6 on the season.
Final week
The final week of regular season play begins Monday. In the Prep League, Rhinelander Black, which fell to 5-7 on the year with a 12-1 loss at Three Lakes Thursday, travels to Eagle River on Monday and hosts Tomahawk Tuesday. Rhinelander Green is at Eagle River Tuesday and hosts Three Lakes Wednesday.
In the Senior League, Laser Pros will look to wrap up a perfect regular season Tuesday at home against winless Tomahawk Blue. Rhinelander Green will close out its regular season Wednesday at Tomahawk Gold.
