Understanding WIC and senior vouchers

Understanding WIC and senior vouchers

By Cassie Shefchik-

WIC and senior citizen vouchers for use at farmers' markets are being sent out as I write. These are state-funded programs for people with low income. The vouchers are to be used to purchase fresh, local produce at area farmers' markets. Vendors who accept the vouchers have a yellow sign displayed in their booth. Not all vendors are allowed to take the vouchers as they don't fall under the strict guidelines for these programs. Vendors who sell fresh fruit and vegetables have to be approved every year by the state.

To help illustrate how the vouchers work let me introduce two fictitious characters named Thorthea Rutherford and Mimzy Spankton (Thor and Mimz). Please don't confuse them with real people because these two 70-some year old ladies are completely made up after a friend and I spent a hot day working outside.

Thor and Mimz arrived at market last year clenching their senior citizen vouchers ready to make purchases. Their minds raced over the many things they might buy, unfortunately they had not read what vouchers allowed them to purchase. Thor's attempts to buy maple syrup, jam, and ground pork met with quick explanations how the vouchers were to be used for fresh produce only.

Meanwhile, Mimz attempted to use them at various vendors for dish cloths, a wreath, and towards the purchase of a rug.

She was also duly informed the vouchers were only to be used for fresh produce.

They planned a new shopping strategy. Thor (a terrible cook) bought lettuce, cucumbers, radishes, and spring onions to make a bunch of big salads. Mimz opted for golden beets, carrots, and spring onions, which she planned to oven roast with olive oil and sea salt. She also bought fresh mushrooms to will be sauteed. They left the market in good spirits thanking vendors for their help during the confusion.

The Hodag Farmers' Market carries a wide variety of produce and other items. We are happy to be included in a wonderful state sponsored program to help lower income people eat fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables.

Come see us at Pioneer Park this Saturday from 8 a.m. til 1 p.m.

Who knows if Thor and Mimz make an appearance (wink).
