Rhinelander Green took advantage of Tomahawk Blue mistakes in the third and fourth innings Tuesday, and had two pitchers combine to toss a three-hitter, as it rolled to an 11-1 win in five innings in Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League play at Stafford Field.

Rhinelander Green had only four hits in the contest but cashed in on four walks and four errors from Tomahawk in the third and the fourth to turn a scoreless game into a 10-0 rout. Both teams plated a run in the fifth and Sam Schoppe scored the clinching run. He singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and scored on a two-out wild pitch.

All was quite until the third when Caleb Shefveland reached on a lead off error to spark the rally. Back-to-back singles by Mason Davis and Kolby Ridderbusch plated Shefveland. After Ryan Jamison reached on a fielder's choice, Joe Schneider hit an RBI groundout and Jacob Schoppe reached on an error, allowing Jamison to score and Rhinelander Green to take a 3-0 lead.

It was more of the same as the Green team batted around in the fourth. A hit batsman, a walk and an error loaded the bases with nobody out before a wild pitch allowed Sam Schneider to score. Davis, Ridderbusch and Jamison all drew walks allowing two more runs to score before Joe Schneider delivered a two-run single to left to push the lead to 8-0. Jamison scored on a wild pitch and Schneider beat a throw home on a Cole Lehman grounder to put the lead to 10.

Braeden Jones singled and scored on a wild pitch for Tomahawk to extend the lead in the top of the fifth before Rhinelander Green scored one in the bottom of the inning to end the contest.

The single by Jones was the only hit allowed by Ridderbusch, who pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Joe Schneider started, scattered two hits over 3 1/3 innings and struck out five.

Schneider also collected three RBIs in the contest while Ridderbusch went 1-for-2 and drove in two. Sam Schneider and Sam Schoppe had the other hits for Rhinelander Green, which moved to 6-4 on the year with the win. Tomahawk Blue fell to 0-8.

Rhinelander Black blasts Lakeland Black

Three days after picking up a forfeit win when Lakeland Black didn't show for a make-up game at Stafford Field, Rhinelander Black won the rematch the old-fashioned way Tuesday in a 16-6 Prep League victory at Stafford Field.

The Black team scored in every inning and plated the clinching run in the bottom of the fifth when Kryle Vanney scored on Cody Everson's fourth RBI of the day, a grounder to short.

Lakeland drew first blood in the first as a walk and wild pitch allowed Ronnie Hilmer to score, but Rhinelander answered in the bottom of the inning as Caleb Plaumann walked and scored on a passed ball.

Rhinelander Black took the lead for good with a three-run second. An infield hit by Everson allowed Kryle Vanney to score. John Curry advanced to third on the play and scored on an errant pick off attempt. Plaumann added an RBI single to make it 4-1.

After Lakeland got a run back in the third, Rhinelander broke the game open in the bottom of the inning. Everson had another RBI single and Will Gretzinger hit a two-run single. Errors allowed Plaumann and Gretzinger to score.

The top of the order came through again for Rhinelander Black in the fourth. Everson reached on an RBI grounder, allowing two runs to score. Plaumann added an infield hit to collect his second RBI of the game. Wild pitches allowed both Everson and Plaumann to score before Owen Ives collected an RBI single to plate Gretzinger.

Lakeland collected only two hits in the game, both off reliever Oscar Hanson, who pitched the final two innings to earn the win. Lakeland scored all of its runs without the aid of an RBI and plated the game-extending run in the top of the fifth on a double steal of second and home.

Everson started for Rhinelander, pitching three innings of hitless ball and struck out two. Hanson struck out four over the final two frames.

The top three in Rhinelander Black's order - Everson, Plaumann and Gretzinger - each had two hits and finished the game a combined 6-for-14. Ives and Kryle Vanney had the other hits for Rhinelander Black, which got back to within a game of .500 at 5-6 with the win.

Up next

Rhinelander Green (5-5) is in the process of playing both Lakeland team's back-to-back in Prep League play. Green traveled to Lakeland Gray last night in a game that concluded after deadline and returns home tonight to face Lakeland Black.

That game will be the first part of a Prep/Senior doubleheader at Stafford Field. Undefeated Laser Pros takes on Rhinelander Green in the nightcap in a rematch of a 3-2 win by Laser Pros on May 31. Laser Pros moved to 10-0 on the season with a 16-0 win over Tomahawk Gold Monday.

In the Prep League, Rhinelander Black travels to Three Lakes this evening.
