Snowshoe baseball returns

The Lake Tomahawk Snowhawks opened the season Monday, taking on Newswatch 12 at Snowshoe Park in Lake Tomahawk.
Snowhawk games are played each Monday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. The goals are simple for coach Jeff Smith this year.
"One of our goals is for everyone to stay healthy," Smith said. "Beat a couple of key teams that we lost to last year. If we can do that we know we improved."
Two of those teams happen to be some of the biggest games of the year. The Chicago All-Stars and Dazzle's Demons, a Rhinelander-based squad, are the teams to beat for the Snowhawks this year.
"I think we've lost to (Dazzle's Demons) four years in a row," Smith said.
But that's not all. There are plenty of teams who promise to challenge the Snowhawks this year.
"We got the new team from Fritz's. We've got the Coaching All-Stars and Zimmy's All-Stars," Smith said. "Every team on our schedule is pretty decent starting July 1."
Another new game this year will be held June 24 when The Lakeland Times forms its own team for the first time ever.
But no matchup is bigger then when the Chicago All-Stars come to town on July 1 and July 4. It's a fun event for everyone involved.
"They're getting better on snowshoes. We can get by with speed on the bases and they're starting to catch up," Smith said. "The fact that we do it in front of a big crowd the Fourth of July makes it fun and the fact they come up from Chicago is a plus."
What makes the sport so different is the fact they play on snowshoes. But there is more to the event than just the game.
"Nobody has the 16-inch ball and the fact it's played on snowshoes makes it unique," Smith said. "We play in a venue with concession pies and snacks also makes it different."
The Snowhawks return just about the same lineup as last year. Paul Miller, Ryan and Dustin Schowalter return to the lineup. Donny Moore, a long time player, returns. Jacob Hodgdon is a new player who used to play with the Minocqua Wood Ducks of the Dairyland League.
"Everyone is going to contribute something. We lost a couple players, but gained a couple good ones back," Smith said. "Consistency in hitting and making sure everyone is healthy."
Snowhawk baseball is back in Lake Tomahawk with lots of excitement. The Snowhawks look to be better than ever with the season underway.
