Donald Otto Schueler, age 98, of Rhinelander, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019, at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Owattana, Minn., to Otto G. and Hattie C. (Grau) Schueler.

He married the love of his life, Muriel M. Singer, on Oct. 21, 1950 and was married for 63 years. Together, along with their children, they operated the family business, City Lumber and Ace Hardware, for over 50 years. They closed the business and retired to their two Wisconsin River homes where he enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling.

Don grew up in Wausau and attended Ripon College from 1940 to1941. In 1942, he enlisted in the military and was a veteran of World War II. He served as a Cryptographic Technician in the Asia-Pacific theater; coding and decoding classified messages at the 10th Army Division's Headquarters Message Center in both Okinawa and Korea. Following his discharge in 1946, he and his father opened their retail lumber business in Rhinelander.

He was a member of the American Legion for 72 years, a member of the Rhinelander Masonic Lodge for 69 years, a member of the Rhinelander Lions club for 66 years, served as a committee member of Boy Scout Troop 595 for many years and was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Don is survived by his five children: Lynn M. Schueler, Donald C. Schueler, Robert A. and (Barbara) Schueler, Sarah J. and (Jeff) Pokrandt and Stuart J. and (Sandra) Schueler; two grandchildren, Erik Hofmeister and David Pokrandt; sister, Marilyn Schueler Bradley; sister-in-law Elaine (Henschel) Schueler; and numerous nephews and nieces.

The Schueler family would like to thank Helping Hands for their excellent and loving care they provided to Don. Additionally, a special thank you goes to his favorite home care worker, Ashley Johnson, who spent the last two and half years helping him with daily tasks.

A celebration of life service to honor Don's long life is planned for Saturday, June 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 235 N. Stevens Street in Rhinelander from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A luncheon will be served.

Carlson Funeral home is assisting the family and condolences may be forwarded to 134 N. Stevens Street, Rhinelander, WI 54501, or at www.carlsonfh.com. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made to the Rhinelander Masonic Lodge #242. Please note "Save the door" on your check and the donation will be designated towards restoring the original "Carnegie" entrance of the Rhinelander District Library. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving the Schueler family.
