A 19-year-old Rhinelander man entered not guilty pleas in Vilas County Circuit Court June 6 to homicide by a vehicle with the use of a controlled substance, possession of narcotics, possession of methamphetamine and causing injury while under the influence, a misdemeanor, in addition to first offense driving while intoxicated.

Tyler J.L. Metz, 19, Rhinelander, is said to have caused a two-car crash near Boulder Junction in January which killed Timothy Boss, 59, Manitowish Waters.

Following the crash, three parties were taken to Howard Young Medical Center for treatment, including Boss' daughter, court reports state. Metz told police there he had taken hydrocodone pills and meth recently.

Toxicology results confirmed Metz had THC, amphetamine and a type of anesthetic in his blood, according court reports.

In court June 6, Metz's attorney, Brian Kinstler, waived a preliminary hearing and entered not guilty pleas on behalf of his client.

"Not guilty pleas on all counts for Mr. Metz," noted Kinstler, a criminal defense lawyer out of Milwaukee.

Kinstler requested a pre-trial conference be scheduled for several weeks out as he recently received a significant amount of discovery from the state and more expected to come.

Medical records and the accident reconstruction report also are still being completed, noted Vilas County District Attorney Martha Milanowski.

Metz is due back to July 30. He is free on a $5,000 cash bond.

As conditions of bond, he must not possess or consume intoxicants, enter taverns, receive and apply alcohol and drug counseling, not contact the victim's family, be in the company of his grandparents and follow a curfew.

Metz is employed, it was noted in court.

A wrongful death suit with the Boss family also has been filed in Vilas County.
