Jake was a lifelong resident of Rhinelander. He graduated from the Rhinelander High School in 1958 and then served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963. He also served as a National Guardsman for 24 years. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he returned to Rhinelander and went to work for the City of Rhinelander as a foreman in the street department. He was with the city for over 38 years at his retirement. Each year he looked forward to putting up the Christmas decorations downtown. It seemed each year he ended up in the paper putting up the garland at Brown and Davenport streets. In his retirement he worked part time for the city in the parking and sidewalk utility. He was the only guy who could legally ride his golf cart all over town.
Jake was always a kind helpful man who had a great sense of humor. HIs greatest joy in life came from his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to attend all of their activities. Jake also enjoyed all Wisconsin sports, reading westerns and mysteries, puzzles and Loretta Lynn. He was proud that he was a good housekeeper and he loved dogs, especially his "Brewer."
Jake is survived by his wife Dawn, his daughters Cory (Michael) Dart and Marcy (Jeff) Eckrich, his sons Michael (Tracy) Hoffhein and William (Jennifer) Hoffhein, his grandchildren Jacob (Lexi Pond) Dart, Jed Dart, Ali Hoffhein, Spencer (Salena Helgeson) Hoffhein, Jackson Hoffhein, Megan Hoffhein, Mason Hoffhein, Tyler Eckrich, Makenzie Pence, Hannah Hoffhein and Hayden Hoffhein, his sister Carol Gilman, nieces, nephews, his dog Brewer, other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandson Cody Hoffhein, his parents and three brothers, George, Robert and Roy.
