According to Oneida County patrol captain Tyler Young, the sheriff's office received a 9-1-1 call at approximately 10:40 a.m. Thursday reporting a three-vehicle crash on Highway 8 near North Rifle Road.
"Citizens on scene reported serious injuries and that airbags were deployed," Young noted in the release. "The vehicles involved were a 2001 Crown Victoria, a 2018 Volvo, and a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado. The operator of the Volvo was transported by ambulance to (Ascension) St. Mary's Hospital as was the operator of the Silverado. The operator of the Crown Victoria was transported by ambulance to the Rhinelander-Oneida County-Airport, transferred to a helicopter and flown to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau. Both passengers of the Crown Victoria were transported to (Ascension) St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. The front passenger was later flown to another hospital by helicopter."
Young did not immediately identify any of the injured persons.
Oneida County deputies along with Rhinelander Police Department, the Oneida County Ambulance, the Wisconsin Highway Patrol, the Crescent Fire Department, the Rhinelander Fire Department, the Oneida County Highway Department, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation responded to the scene. The sheriff's office will be completing the accident report and the Wisconsin State Patrol is completing a reconstruction of the accident, Young noted.
Highway 8 was closed to traffic for more than four hours while emergency personnel assisted the victims and law enforcement investigated the crash.
