Rhinelander 10Us can't keep up with Wausau American
The Hodags managed only one hit and Wausau used four-run outbursts in the second and fourth to win 8-0 at Pride Park in Merrill. The Americans won Pool A with a 3-0 record. Rhinelander finished second in the pool at 2-1 and advanced with Wausau American to the second week of the District 5 tournament.
Rohan Robbins got the Americans going with a bases loaded singles with nobody out in the bottom of the second. Two batters later, Jackson Riley singled in a run, and Robbins scored when the ball was misplayed in the outfield.
Rhinelander turned a double play in the fourth, but the Americans launched a two-out rally. A Riley single followed by back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Sam Barthels, who cleared them with a three-run double to right. Barthels later scored on a throwing error to make it 8-0.
Barthels stood out on the mound for American, too, striking out 13 in a complete game effort. The only base runner he allowed was a leadoff bunt single by Aiden Lueder in the third inning, but Lueder was erased as part of a strike-out, throw-out double play.
Lueder started and went two innings on the mound for Rhinelander, allowing two earned runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Vince White allowed four runs on thee hits with three strikeouts over the third and fourth innings. Sawyer Bishop came on and struck out the side for Rhinelander in a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
Rhinelander, as the second-place team in Pool A, will take on the first-place team in Pool B, Kaukauna, to start the second week of District 5 play. The teams will play in the first round of the four-team, double elimination tournament at 7 p.m. Monday at Doepke Park in Wausau.
