The Hodags scored three times in the sixth, and twice more in the seventh to walk off as 8-7 winners over Tomahawk in a Prep League contest at Stafford Field.
Owen Ives delivered the game winner with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh as Tomahawk was unable to field his slow roller to first and throw to the plate in time to prevent Alex Rappley from crossing as the winning run.
Things looked bleak for the home team, trailing 7-3 with two outs and nobody on base in the sixth, but Ives got the rally going with a walk, and took second on an errant pick off attempt by the catcher. Cody Everson reached on an error to short to continue the inning. Following a Will Gretzinger walk and a Kaden Vanney infield hit, Mason Baker drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and another run scored when John Curry reached on an error, cutting the lead to 7-6.
Rhinelander got out of the seventh unscathed despite giving up a leadoff single and then the bottom five of Rhinelander's 12-man lineup did the rest. Caleb Plaumann began the seventh-inning charge with a double to left. Alex Rappley walked, Pierce French hit a game-tying single to left and Richard Threlkeld drew a walk to load the bases for Ives.
The game started inauspiciously for Rhinelander as Tomahawk tagged Gretzinger for three runs on five hits in the opening frame. Gretzinger singled and scored on a Baker grounder to make it 3-1 after an inning, but Tomahawk got another run off Gretzinger in the third and three off Oscar Hanson in the fourth to make it 7-1.
Rhinelander got two runs back in the bottom of the inning as Everson walked and Gretzinger singled to start the frame. Both players scored after Baker singled and moved to second on a throwing error.
Tomahawk had a chance to do more damage in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out, but Rhinelander threw out a runner trying to score on a wild pitch and got out of the inning thanks to a ground ball out. The Hodags turned a double play in the sixth to erase a Tomahawk runner on second and get out of another jam.
The rally made a winner out of Ives on the hill. He allowed a pair of hits, but did not walk any batters over the final two innings. Gretzinger started and went three innings without a walk. He gave up four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. Hanson allowed three runs on two hits over two innings. He walked two and hit four batters.
Gretzinger led Rhinelander's offense, going 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored. Baker was 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Everson, Kaden Vanney, Plaumann and French had the other hits for the Black team.
The win, coupled with a 7-1 win over Eagle River the night before, got Rhinelander Black back to .500 on the season (7-7), and in fourth place overall Prep League standings. It also spoiled Tomahawk chances of moving into second place and earning the final spot in the Prep League regular season championship game. Crandon and Three Lakes will battle for the regular season title Monday at Stafford Field.
