The Rhinelander Area Food Pantry (RAFP), with assistance from the UW Extension, is promoting a healthier diet including improved nutrition and reduced sodium options.

The first step of the process has already begun and food pantry clients are being educated to choose from the Food Drive 5 list which includes increasing protein foods, fruit, soups, whole grain and vegetables, the nonprofit organization explained in a press release announcing the initiative.

The second step of the process includes requesting that donations to RAFP be done with an increased emphasis on healthier choices within the Food Drive 5 program.

"As more families depend on food pantries for a greater share of the food that they eat, it is even more important that foods offered provide good nutrition," RAFP executive director Guy Hansen said in the release. "With this in mind, (we ask) that donations be made with an eye towards the Food Drive 5 list as well as lower sodium options."
