Local women's group makes blankets for Operation Smile as part of MLK Day of Service
Sixteen clubwomen braved sub-zero temperatures Monday to gather at the Oneida County Senior Center with a goal of making no-sew blankets for Operation Smile, the group announced in a press release. The ladies made and completed 23 no-sew blankets and several women left with blankets almost completed, the release states. One member, Dee Jacobs, sent a photo of herself cutting blanket fringes underneath a Florida palm tree. "Club Chairwoman of the International Outreach Community Service Area, Judy Kingsbury, provided cutting tools that made the process go smoothly," the release states. "Everyone seemed to have had a good time chatting, being together and serving the greater good. Blankets made between today and our May meeting will be packaged and sent to Operation Smile."
Operation Smile is an international medical charity that has provided hundreds of thousands of free surgeries for children and young adults in developing countries who are born with dental or facial conditions. It is one of the oldest and largest volunteer-based organizations dedicated to improving the health and lives of children worldwide through access to surgical care.
The MLK Day of Service is a national effort encouraging volunteers across the country to join together for a day of community service. One of GFWC's Seven Grand Initiatives for its 2018-2020 Administration is for clubs to answer that call and demonstrate the power of volunteerism and community leadership. GFWC clubs serve their communities year-round, but this national day of service provides a special opportunity to join neighbors, family, and friends in taking action, the release notes.
The General Federation of Women's Clubs is a unifying force, bringing together local women's clubs, with members dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. With nearly 80,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries, GFWC members are community leaders who work locally to create global change by supporting the arts, preserving natural resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement, and working toward world peace and understanding.
