These life challenges and the lessons learned along the way will play out on the Nicolet College Theatre stage when ArtsPower National Touring Theater presents "Amber Brown is Not a Crayon" at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2.
The funny and forthright children's musical is suited for those in grades one through four as well as the adults who have kids this age in their lives, according to a Nicolet press release.
Tickets are $6 for children, $8 for the general public and can be ordered online at nicoletlive.com or by calling (715) 365-4646.
The production is part of the college's Nicolet Live! performing arts series, which has included live theatrical performances for children since the series' early days more than 20 years ago.
"We've always believed that theater is for everyone of all ages," Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall said in the press release. "It's exciting and rewarding to see children really light up and get so engaged when they see a live performance. For many, it's the first time they'll have experienced something like this and opens a whole new world for them."
The story focuses on Amber and Justin, the perfect team. The laugh at each other's jokes, sit next to each other in class, and often know what the other is thinking without saying a word.
But now things are different. Now Justin's house has been sold, and he is moving to Alabama, too far from New Jersey to even think about. At first Amber, who has felt insecure since her parents were divorced, cannot cope with the loss of her companion. She begins by pretending he can't possibly leave her. She becomes furious when she accepts his inevitable departure, but finally realizes that this goodbye is not forever.
The Broadway-style musical includes moving ballads and upbeat swing numbers, providing an excellent complement to the plot's combination of amusing exchanges, serious themes about life lessons, and how good can ultimately come out of challenging situations.
