Anyone interested in performing in the production is encouraged to try out for the play with auditions scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, March 11 and 12, in the Nicolet College Theatre, the college announced in a press release.
As one of the largest productions ever put on by the community theatre troupe, there are roles for 20 individuals, 10 males and 10 females, the release states.
"Some of the roles require significant stage time and others are smaller parts which are perfect for anyone looking to try community theater for the first time," said Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall.
"This is a big cast and I know we are going to have a great time bringing this classic story to life."
As always, everyone is welcome to audition. Those interested do not need any acting experience and they do not need to be Nicolet students. No preparation is required, but actors are typically better prepared if they have read the script beforehand.
Scripts are available at most public libraries.
Arthur Miller wrote the Tony-award winning play in response to Sen. Joe McCarthy's hearings in the 1950s intended to expose subversive communists in the U.S.
The playwright set his story in 1692, using the Salem Witch Trials as the backdrop. In the play, several young girls and a servant were caught in the woods, conjuring - or attempting to conjure - spirits from the dead. Rumors of witchcraft quickly spread through the town. Rather than suffer severe punishment for their actions, the girls accuse other inhabitants of Salem of practicing witchcraft. This desperate, dangerous, and childish finger-pointing results in mass paranoia and an atmosphere of fear in which everyone is a potential witch.
Most of the male roles are for men over the age of 30, although a couple can be cast younger. Five of the female roles are for teen girls age 13 to 18 with the remainder between the ages of 30 and 70.
More details about the play, including a detailed list of characters, are available at nicoletlive.com.
