"Our entire team contributed to this win, either with the points they received for their finishing place or by cheering on their fellow teammates. It is a group effort," RSC head coach Megan Cihla said. "The most exciting swims of the meet were the relays. The enthusiasm and energy were contagious and really got the team motivated! There was some tough competition and the kids really dug in and fought for their team."
In all, 48 members of the Rhinelander Swim Club earned a spot on the podium by placing in the top eight in at least one event. The Hodags had 28 conference championship performances over the two-day meet. One of those performances, the boys' 13-14 200-yard medley relay of Daniel Gillingham, Jack Antonuk, Charlie Heck and Marcus O'Malley set a new club record with a time of 1 minute, 57.34 seconds.
Rhinelander also had state-qualifying times posted by Jack Antonuk in the 1,000 freestyle (11:12.75), Vivian Lamers in the 100 individual medley (1:19.44) and Ella Heck in the 50 breaststroke (43.24).
"Although the regular season is over, many swimmers are talking about what they personally want to accomplish next season," Cihla said. "I love that these kids are setting goals for themselves and will be working in the offseason to achieve them."
Additionally, Cihla said the club had a record number of athletes qualify for the Wisconsin State swim meet later this month or the Midwest Regional meet in March
"These athletes will continue training and perfecting their swims for another month or two," she said. "I am looking forward to watching them represent our club at these meets they worked hard to qualify for."
