The Northern Edge girls' hockey team gave it their best shot Tuesday night but fell 7-1 at the Eagle River Sports Arena.
The Eagles smothered the Edge all night, finishing with a 62-11 margin in shots on goal.
"(The Eagles) want the puck, they get after the puck," explained coach Tom Roeser. "They're hungry for it, they want to win every little battle and they do cause it's all mental, they want the puck."
The lone goal for the Edge came from Kate Vizanko in the third period. After a shot on goal from defender Maria Gironella, Vizanko found the rebound and put it in the back of the net.
"It was a puck to the net, and we had someone finally chase it for a rebound which we didn't have all night," Roeser said.
Unfortunately the goal came a little too late. By that time, the Eagles already had a 5-0 lead, thanks to a barrage of shots throughout the night. Pines scored twice in each of the first two periods and tacked on three more in the third.
"The separation between those two teams is Eagle River wants the puck more," Roeser said.
The scoring started three and half minutes into the first period. Grace Wittkopf scored off a pass from Allison Kieffer.
About four minutes later, the Eagles had their second goal of the period. This one came via Kieffer on assists by Wittkopf and Madison Stebbeds. The Eagles led 2-0 after one period.
It didn't take long for the Eagles to capitalize on their scoring chances in the second period. Kieffer scored her second goal of the game 37 seconds into the period. Wittkopf recorded her second assist of the game.
Just 22 seconds later the Eagles scored yet again. Wittkopf stamped her name in the game yet again, scoring her second goal on an assist by Stebbeds. The Eagles led 4-0 after two periods.
One positive from the game came in the third period. Anna Maulson played in goal the entire third period and made numerous saves. On several occasions she made saves right in front of her. Another time there were multiple shots that caromed off her that she fell on.
"Anna stepped in (and) did a great job," Roeser said. "Toward the end we were running our fourth and fifth line. She did a really good job, she stayed poised."
The combination of Wittkopf and Stebbeds returned again in the third period. Wittkopf scored her third goal of the game as Stebbeds recorded her third assist of the game. Hannah Kramsvogel also had an assist on the play.
All of the Eagles' goals had been at even strength thus far. But after an Edge penalty, the Eagles struck for their first power play goal. Halle Kerner snuck one past Maulson on the far side of the net on a pass from Emma Sima.
Right before the end of the game, the Eagles scored once more. Stebbeds scored her first goal of the game assisted by Wittkopf yet again.
The Northern Edge (0-3-0) skates again Friday night against Medford at the Simek Recreational Center. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
