Like many regions across the country, the Northwoods is seeing an increase in its population of older adults, many of whom are active in the community.

That, coupled with another statistic - one in 10 people over the age of 65 has Alzheimer's disease or other form of dementia - has prompted local businesses, including Park City Credit Union, to work toward dementia friendly certification.

"As a dementia friendly institution, Park City is equipped to serve people with memory loss and their families," credit union officials said in a press release.

The certification was granted by The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin, the release notes.

"During this process, we learned about the social stigma associated with memory loss, and how we can promote a sense of independence and be more supportive," explained Park City CEO Val Mindak. "By being more dementia aware, our community becomes stronger. I encourage other businesses and organizations to do the same."
