The majority of funding for the new truck comes from the Wausau American Legion post.
A press release issued by the Montgomery-Plant-Dudley American Legion Post 10 states the post's membership approved a motion to make its largest donation in its 100 year history - an amount not to exceed $35,000 - to fund the purchase of the Ram.
The money was put in the Wisconsin American Legion Foundation along with another $10,000 raised by the American Legion Riders.
Camp director Don Grundy said he'd been trying to get a new plow truck for awhile and had been working specifically with members of American Legion Post 10, meeting with them during the winter "a couple of years ago."
"One of the things I talked about was our needs," he said. "I've been trying to get a new truck for awhile and last year, they had a one-ton dump truck lined up but didn't have all the funding."
Grundy said Post 10 is also underwriting the expenses for the new Veteran Resource Center which will be in the camp's health and wellness building.
Thom Passow, Post 10's liaison officer, reached out to him, he said.
"Thom called me and said 'Hey, we heard you're in need of a truck,'" Grundy said, adding that Passow told him there was a dealer that had a brand new vehicle and was willing to give the Legion post a deal.
"He said the post was willing to put in $35,000 if Camp American Legion and the state American Legion would put the another $10,000 into the project," Grundy said.
The truck will be equipped with a new Boss V-plow.
Grundy said Wausau Legion Post 10 is also going to pay to have the truck undercoated and a bedliner sprayed into it.
The press release said the new Ram was purchased in Wausau from the Brickner Family dealership which "provided a significant discount to this Post 10 project."
"Document signing to procure the vehicle was completed on Dec. 2 with delivery of the vehicle slotted to occur in less than two weeks," the press release said.
The new Ram will replace another truck that's more than 20 years old and no longer road worthy.
One of the goals Grundy mentioned early on in his tenure as director of Camp American Legion is to have the camp open into the winter months if not year round.
And that's one of the things the members of American Legion Post 10 considered in making the donation.
"This upgrade in vehicles will allow the Camp to remain open longer, with year-round possibilities," the Post 10 press release said. "Additionally, the vehicle will be able to be used in local events, promoting the camp in the Northwoods area."
