Rhinelander High School is once again in search of a head volleyball coach.

Brianna Scheuermann informed RHS activities director Brian Paulson earlier this week that she will be stepping down from the position after two years at the helm. A change in hours at her current place of employment would interfere with her ability to coach, both she and Paulson told the River News.

"We've all been there before where we love coaching and have that passion, but at the end of the day what pays the bills? A full time job, obviously. I'm happy for her to find that for her and her family," Paulson said.

Scheuermann (nee Gilbert) is an 2014 RHS alumna and played for former coach Kathy Wawrzynowicz, who retired following the 2017 season. Scheuermann served as a JV coach under Wawrzynowicz in 2017 before taking over the reigns of the program.

"It was great being able to take a different view of volleyball, not just being a player, but learning the game of volleyball - the rules and coaching other girls where I've been in their shoes before," she said.

Scheuermann was hired only weeks before the start of the 2018 season and success has been hard to come by. The Hodags were only 2-71 in her two seasons, including 0-24 in the GNC.

"This season was kind of an accomplishment in itself," Scheuermann said. "We still had the same record as last season but, this year, we definitely played a little more competitive. We won a few more sets than last year. It was good to see that they took steps to being more competitive this year."

Rhinelander won five sets in GNC play this past year, compared to only one set in 2018.

Scheuermann thanked assistants Dan Wolter, Matt Nichols, Zoey Kapusta and Jim Povolo for "taking time out of their busy schedules to help the program." She also thanked AD Brian Paulson for his support.

A Hodag volleyball program that had stability during the majority of Wawrzynowicz's 18-year tenure will now be looking for its fifth different head coach since 2013. Wawrzynowicz coached from 1998-2012 before taking a leave of absence to be with her ailing husband, Henry, who passed away from complications of cancer in August of 2013. Paul Mildebrandt was the interim coach that season. Wawrzynowicz returned the following year and retired for the first time following the 2014 season. She came back in 2016 after her successor, Amanda Rezny, stepped down following only one season due to family reasons.

"We've been down this road two years ago," Paulson said. "The biggest goal right now has got to be hiring a coach and getting some stability in our volleyball program."

Paulson credited Scheuermann for her work in helping to created more youth volleyball opportunities in an effort to build the pipeline of players coming up to the high school ranks.
