Second-grade families at Pelican School enjoyed a Family Night event Nov. 19 centered around math. Parents attended an informational session where they learned about ways to help their children add and subtract multi-digit numbers without using the traditional algorithm, school officials explained in a press release.

"Students met in the library and learned some math games that will help to improve math fluency," the release states. "Students played games like I See Ten, Hit the Target, Make 10 Pyramid, and Salute. Families were given a deck of cards and a booklet of math games to play at home. Students were encouraged to teach their parents and siblings the games that they had learned during the family night. Pelican had a great turnout and fun was had by all. Parents were appreciative and had a much better understanding of why math is taught the way it is."

All grade levels at Pelican School have a family night sometime during the school year as well as some all-school family nights. The next family night will be for the third-grade families and will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5.
