Snowhawks slip up against Zimmy's All-Stars

Zimmy's scored nine times in the 10th inning as rain drenched the field to pick up a wet and wild 16-7 win over the Snowhawks.
In the top of the ninth, Zimmy's was up to bat with the game tied 7-7. Dominic Caroselli drew a leadoff walk. Then Blain Wauters ended any threat when he grounded into a double play. No runs scored as rain continued to come down.
The Snowhawks had a chance for a walkoff hit in the bottom of the ninth, but Zimmy's did a great job of creating soft contact and induced three straight groundouts. That meant bonus baseball yet again in Lake Tomahawk.
"It was tight all way around. Runs were tough to get," Snowhawks player-coach Jeff Smith explained.
Zimmy's exploded in the 10th inning. Randy Robinson led the inning off with a single. Next was Sam Webber, who reached on a drop in left field due to the wet conditions. Runners were on first and second.
Up next was Tanner Lopez, who hit a weak grounder to the pitcher, but because of an error on the mound, all runners were safe and the bases were loaded.
"It was raining pretty good, but the ball got super slippery and when they hit a couple good shots, the ball squabbled underneath our feet," Smith said.
Joey Marshal came up next to break the tie, and he did just that with an RBI, reaching on an error by shortstop Derek Young. The rainy conditions were impacting the Snowhawks.
"It was on both sides, but (the rain) affected us more because they got a lot more solid hits," Smith said. "It doesn't get any better the more the ball gets soaked."
Ricky Schroeder did the same thing and reached on a fielder's choice RBI. It was 9-7. Tommy Ziamba kept the train rolling with another RBI fielder's choice. It was 10-7. The Snowhawks were struggling in the field and could not get guys out.
There was only one out and the bases were loaded. Caroselli opened the game up with a two-run double to make it 12-7. Wauters followed that up with a two-run double of his own and it was 14-7. No one was stopping the onslaught.
"Our defense fell apart in the 10th and we could not get a guy out," Smith said.
The hits just kept coming. John Otteson smoked one to right field for an RBI triple and Nick Pitterly singled to make it 16-7.
The Snowhawks had a chance to score at least one run, but a great relay was turned on a ball hit to center off the bat of Brent Cella and Cole Punches got thrown out at home. No more runs scored and the game was over.
"They might not be the best on snowshoes, but they made up for it with accurate throws and base running," Smith said. "They really hung in there."
In the first, the bases were loaded for the Snowhawks when Cella hit a sacrifice fly to score Smith. It gave them a 1-0 lead.
The Snowhawks had a big third inning. Cella tripled to score a run stake a 2-0 lead. Dustin Schowalter hit a sacrifice fly a couple of batters later and the Snowhawks had a quick 4-0 lead.
Zimmy's continued to score some runs when Caroselli singled and later scored, but the Snowhawks still had the lead.
"We had one not so good inning where we had a couple of errors and that let them come back in the game," Smith said.
In the top of the fifth, Weber singled to left and there were runners on first and third. Lopez singled next on a blooper to center that was almost caught on a diving catch. The Snowhawks led 5-3.
The sixth was another big inning in the game. Brady Bruhl, Tommy Ziamba and Jeff Ziamba all singled to start the inning. A Caroselli single scored a run. Wauters also singled and before you knew it, Zimmy's had a 7-5 lead.
Young singled and came around to score for the Snowhawks in the seventh inning to tie the game at seven apiece.
"We tried and we didn't always take advantage when we had guys on base. We also had a couple of guys hit into double plays," Smith said.
The Snowhawks will be back in action Monday as they take on Shamrock Pub and Eatery at 7:30 p.m. at Snowshoe Park.
