The league held its 11th annual Pink Night at the course and the event set new high-water marks for participants (47) and money raised ($2,400).
"It was wonderful day for us. Everything went very well. We couldn't have asked for a nicer day," said league member Carole Zierden who helped spearhead the event. "We were just overwhelmed by the amount of gifts and prizes that were donated by our community and the support that we have."
All the money raised from the event will remain in the area and support cancer initiatives in the Northwoods. Zierden said the group will donate $1,900 to the James Beck Cancer Center at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. The other $500 will go to the Ties That Bind Us cancer support group in Tomahawk.
"It's not a lot of money, but it still helps," Zierden said. "It helps people that are there. That's probably the nicest thing we can do to show some support to help them when they're going through the treatments they have to face. We just want to be able to help."
Zierden noted that roughly 30 percent of those who participated in Tuesday's outing were guests from the ladies league at Inshalla Country Club in Tomahawk.
The majority of the funds the league raises surround the night's golfing activities - between two different scramble contests during the round, and raffles following the event. Additionally, members of the league held a betting hole contest last Wednesday in conjunction with Northwood men's league play.
Since 2009, the event has raised more than $15,000 for cancer support initiatives.
Zierden thanked the Northwood Ladies League, Inshalla Ladies League, Northwood Golf Club pro Kyle Christian, the staff at Whipsaw Bar & Grill, and the area individuals and business who donated to the event for their support.
"Cancer affects so many people in our community and, I don't think there was a woman there who had dry eyes, when some of the ladies got up and talked about their battle with cancer and how its affected them and their families," she said. "It was a really moving evening, but it wouldn't happen without the support of the community and the support of our league to make it possible."
