Irene was born June 16, 1929, in Sugar Camp, to Joseph and Katherine (Furtak) Kliss. She was a lifelong resident of the Town of Sugar Camp. She attended the Sunset, one room schoolhouse, for her elementary education. Irene then attended Rhinelander High School graduating in 1947. She married Oscar Thorn on Sept. 2, 1950 at the St. Kunegunda's Catholic Church in Sugar Camp and the Lord blessed them with 55 years of marriage.
Throughout the years, besides raising her family, Irene was employed in a few different occupations. She worked for JC Penney, served as Sugar Camp Town Treasurer, was a correspondent for the Vilas County News Review for Sugar Camp news and then retired from the Oneida County Veterans Services in the early 1990s.
Irene was very proud of her Polish heritage and her Town of Sugar Camp. She served as the town historian as she was part of that for almost a century. If you needed to know something or someone you just needed to call Irene. When you got a hold of her she would help you anyway she could in a caring and pleasant manner. She may even give you one of her famous loaves of bread or buns.
Irene loved her family like most mothers do, but she knew that they were a gift from her Lord and Savior. The center of all Irene did was rooted in her Lord and Savior, whom she worshipped daily on her own and through the church she loved, St. Kunegunda's Catholic Church in Sugar Camp. Her church and Catholic faith was evident in all she did, from when she was a child to now as she meets her Savior. Over almost a century Irene was involved in many activities of the church. She was a member of the church choir since she was 8 years old for a total of 82 years. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, town and church.
Irene is survived by her daughters Cynthia (Barry) Wallis of Sugar Camp, Mary Thorn of Watersmeet, Mich., her sons Joseph (Elaine) Thorn and James Thorn, both of Sugar Camp, her daughter-in-law Nancy Thorn of Sugar Camp, 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar on Sept. 16, 2005, her son Kenneth, her sisters Anne Stefonek, Florence Conklin, Helen Welch-Berquist, Genevieve Stefonik and her brother William Kliss.
Visitation for Irene will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 from 4 to 7 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m., at the Carlson Funeral Home in Rhinelander. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m., all at St. Kunegunda Catholic Church. Father Bala Reddy Allam and Deacon Al Goodrich will officiate. Interment will follow in the St. Kunegunda Catholic Cemetery. A memorial will be established in Irene's name and any considerations may be directed to her family. You may also leave your private condolences for the Thorn family at www.carlsonfh.com.
