Marv was born on May 29, 1932 in Little Chute to John and Hattie (Williamson) Schumacher. The 10th of 12 children, he worked on the family farm and enjoyed playing baseball with his brothers. Marv graduated from St. John Catholic High School in 1950, after which he served in the Army in Japan as a stenographer and chaplain's assistant. Upon his return, he was employed by Wisconsin Bell as a lineman.
In 1957 Marv met Leona Forth on a blind date and they were married April 12, 1958. Shortly after that, they relocated to Rhinelander where they joined Leona's parents in running Forth Floral, Inc. For the next 30 years, Marv and Leona worked to build and continue the family business, first by partnering with Arthur and Julia Forth, then with their daughter and son-in-law Ruth and Henning Hempel. Marv was an exceptionally hard-working individual who taught his daughters to approach work and life with enthusiasm and perseverance. He expected a lot from himself and his family, and in doing so, demonstrated the rewards that come from giving 100 percent.
Marv was community minded - he served on the board of the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce and sang in the Nicolet Male Chorus. He loved music, especially bluegrass and folk music and loved to hear his daughters sing. In his professional career, Marv was a district representative for FTD for several years as well as a chairman of the Wisconsin Upper Michigan Florist Association. A man of deep faith, Marv was a devout Catholic who was active in his parish, the former St. Joseph Catholic Church (now Nativity of Our Lord). He served as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, Parish Council member and was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.
Marv enjoyed playing tennis in his younger years and was an active bowler after moving to Rhinelander. He loved working in the woods, cutting and splitting logs for the many campfires he enjoyed with his family. Marv was a tremendous host who made everyone feel at home and was quick to offer a beverage, most often a beer. Outgoing, easy to talk to and humorous, Marv was blessed with many friends and easily made new ones. He was a generous and humble man who avoided the spotlight and put others first.
Marv was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, two sisters and five sisters-in-law. Left to honor and remember Marv are his wife of 61 years, Leona, their four daughters; Ruth (Henning) Hempel of Rhinelander, Sara (Andy) Schumerth of Green Bay, Mary (Jim) Bloch of Rhinelander and Julie (Dave) Stieber of Wadsworth, Ohio. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Nils, Max and Annika Hempel, Nick (Julie) Schubach, Leah (Jake) Hustad, Dominic Schumerth, Abby, Matthew and Tessa Bloch and Ted and Ellie Stieber and three great-grandchildren, Milo and Mia Schubach and Olen Hustad. Brothers; John (Katie) Schumacher, Jim (Donna) Schumacher, sisters-in-laws; Germaine Schumacher, Marian Schumacher and Florus Schumacher and in-laws; John and Charlotte Krumm.
Family, friends, and others who had the pleasure of knowing Marv are invited to a visitation Monday, April 29, 2019 at the Hildebrand Funeral Home, (24 E. Davenport Street, Rhinelander) from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a Rosary to begin at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Nativity of Our Lord Parish located at the corner of Conro and King Street, Rhinelander at 11 a.m. with visitation at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Father Michael Tupa and Deacon Michael Harvey will be officiating. Immediately following the mass everyone is invited to join the family in processing to Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery for the Committal Service and where Marv will be honored for his military service by the Ray Rousseau V.F.W. Post 3143, Rhinelander and by two representatives from the United States Army.
