The School District of Rhinelander is looking for local business and community members who are interested in working one-on-one with students as part of a mentoring program.

"We are looking for volunteers to work with students for a half hour to 45 minutes once a week during the school day and/or in our after-school program," district officials said in a press release. "Mentors will have the opportunity to connect with students and teach life skills, share with students their areas of expertise and interests, work on crafts and hobbies, play games, or just sit and talk. This is a great opportunity to connect with the children of our community and to be a positive role model in their lives. No special skills or experience are needed to be a mentor - only a willingness to listen, encourage, and show children that they matter and are important."

Studies show that children who have relationships with adults who encourage and value them have higher graduation and college enrollment rates, increased self-esteem and regard for others, and are less likely to use drugs and alcohol, among numerous other benefits, the release states.
